Why Our Patterns Fit Differently

At LilypaDesigns, we don’t draft patterns for “standard sizes.” Most bra patterns—and nearly every store-bought bra—use just two numbers: full bust and underbust. But if you’ve ever measured the same as someone else and still needed a totally different fit… you already know that system doesn’t tell the whole story. That’s why we do things differently.

Our sizing method uses actual breast measurements—like width, height, and shape—so you’re not stuck with whatever size your tape measure says you “should” be. We separate cup volume from band size, and start by understanding your breast root—that’s the unique curve where your breast meets your chest wall. So instead of forcing your body into a size, we build the size around your body.

It’s kind of like grading a dress pattern across three different measurements—bust, waist, and hip—only this time, it’s for your bra. And it works.

This system is especially helpful for folks with:

  • A fuller bust and smaller band

  • A larger band and smaller bust

  • Narrow or wide breast roots

  • Asymmetry or post-surgical changes

  • …or anyone who’s ever felt like “standard sizing” just doesn’t fit

You’ll see this approach reflected in our patterns, instructions, and online courses. Because you deserve a bra that fits your shape—not someone else’s idea of average.
